Incoming exchange students

PRESENTATION: THE UNIVERSITY FOR FOREIGNERS OF SIENA:

The University for Foreigners of Siena, now located in a brand new building just opposite Siena railway station, is a public institution committed in teaching Italian language and culture to foreigners.

The University for Foreigners of Siena is open both to Italian and international students.

The University offers bachelor and master programs, postgraduate and PhD courses, short-term Italian language programs and language certificate.

 

ACADEMIC CALENDAR:

Department courses: our academic calendar consists of a first semester (Fall semester) which spans from the end of September to February, and a second semester (Spring semester) from the second half of February to July.

The exams of the first semester are held during the months of January and February, and those of the second semester take place in the months of June and July.

Italian language courses are held every month for a total of 80 hours per month. The student obtains 4 CFU/ECTS at the end of each month if she/he passes the final exam.

 

DEADLINE FOR NOMINATIONS:

first term and full academic year: 31st May of every year

second term: 31st October of every year

 

DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS:

first term and full academic year: 15th July of every year

second term: 15th December of every year

 

DOCUMENTS REQUIRED FOR THE APPLICATION:

Application form + copy of passport (the application form will be sent to the student once received her/his nomination from her/his home University).

 

DEPARTMENT COURSES:

Our University has one Department of Humanities (DISU). It offers 3 Undergraduate Bachelor’s Degrees (3 years) and 2 Postgraduate Master’s degrees (2 years). Exchange students are allowed to take classes from different degrees but they are excluded to take courses from our online degree course "italian language, literature and arts in an international perspective". They can also attend our Italian Language Courses free of charge for 3 months. 

Please pay notice that all our courses are held in ITALIAN, therefore your level of Italian should be at least B2.

 

ITALIAN LANGUAGE COURSES:

As an incoming international student at Unistrasi you have the opportunity to attend 3 months free of charge of our Italian Language Courses: 80 hours per month – 4 ECTS credits each.

ACCOMODATION: 

The University for Foreigners of Siena is able to help all incoming students to find a suitable accommodation during their study period.

Among the options you can find:

Villa il Pino: a guesthouse conveniently located in a green and peaceful area, 15 min. by bus from the city centre and 10 min. from the University. MEALS:
Students enrolled at the University for Foreigners may have their meals at the University dining halls:

“Sant’Agata” canteen - Via Sant’Agata, 1 (from Monday to Sunday, lunch 12.00 – 15.00, dinner 19.00-21.30) 

Unistrasi Tendostruttura - Piazza Carlo Rosselli, 27/28 (from Monday to Friday, only for lunch 12.30 – 14.30, by reservation only) 

 "San Miniato" canteen - Via Enrico de Nicola, 9, 53100 Siena SI (from Monday to Saturday, lunch 11.45-14.15, dinner 18.45-20.45)

 

 

VISA INFORMATION AND RESIDENCE PERMIT: 

Students coming from a country not belonging to the European Union must apply for a student visa before their arrival to Italy (http://vistoperitalia.esteri.it/home/en). In order to apply for a VISA, students are required to pre-enroll via Universitaly portal https://www.universitaly.it/

 

According to the Italian law, non-EU citizens who decide to stay in Italy for more than 3 months, or are in possession of study visa type D, must request a residency permit within 8 working days since their arrival in Italy.

HEALTH INSURANCE FOR NON-UE STUDENTS:

 

Students coming from countries outside the European Union can choose between two possible health insurances:

- Optional registration with the National Health Service (NHS), the price is 700 euro. 

To register you must enclose the payment receipt and the registration form filled out.

NB: Registration is valid for the solar year (from 1 January to 31 December) regardless of the payment date, and it cannot be divided. 

 -  The students requiring health insurance for the issue of the residence permit should visit this website, then go to the "Extra Ue richiedente permesso di soggiorno" section, proceed with registration and follow the steps for payment (bill, bank transfer, card, PayPal)  and the consequent obtaining of the insurance.
The procedure will be entirely online, with the health insurance certificate being uploaded to the student's personal area, so that it can be directly printed by the student. The price is starting from 86 euro.
